College of Veterinary Medicine

First in the nation

Iowa State established the first public veterinary school in the nation in 1879, and still is innovating with excellence in professional practice and research. Fourth-year students pick one of four areas of study to focus on: small animal, equine, food animal, or mixed animal.

Innovative teaching reaches global audience

Locke Karriker, director of the nation’s only national center devoted to swine education, is teaching Iowa State veterinary students and veterinary professionals the most progressive, evidence-based practices in pork production and health assurance.

Student clubs and organizations, international programs, coursework with hands-on learning, and service opportunities offer College of Veterinary students the chance to broaden their experience and explore beyond the classroom.

Making a difference

Enhance your educational experience by participating in any number of activities that will make you a practice ready veterinarian by the time you graduate. Student groups organize wet labs and off-site clinics that provide additional learning opportunities for student veterinarians.
