Adventuring through cyberspace

Students from ISERink virtual lab

Watch the nightly news and chances are you'll see stories about cybersecurity. From how we handle cyber threats to ways we can increase our safety, this is an issue that weighs heavily on our nation's collective mind. That's where Iowa State's ISERink virtual lab comes in. It's preparing users to change the world of cybersecurity.

ISERink is described as a cybersecurity playground. It provides an environment for users to test and learn how to use cybersecurity tools -- without actually being connected to the Internet. This allows individuals to practice real-world security attacks and simulations they otherwise wouldn't be able to do. So it's no wonder why ISERink was named a finalist for a 2016 R&D 100 Award, dubbed the "Oscars of Invention."

Iowa State uses ISERink in a variety of ways, from hosting cyberdefense competitions to training members of the Iowa National Guard. And, of course, the lab prepares students to be on the cutting edge of cybersecurity. Said Keane O'Kelley, senior in computer engineering, "Working with ISERink has given me many unique opportunities to improve my technical skills and prepare me to be successful in almost any job."

No matter what you choose to major in at Iowa State, you'll find exciting real-world opportunities you can't get anywhere else. Be it partnering with large corporations to run business projects or practicing the latest security techniques in a virtual lab, at Iowa State you can turn your career dreams into a reality.
