10 adventures you have to do your first year at Iowa State
What should you do when you get to Iowa State? Cyclonelife.net blogger Zoey Mauck, junior in landscape architecture, offers up some activities she thinks every Iowa State student should check out. Add them to your college bucket list!
See a concert at the Maintenance Shop
The Maintenance Shop, a music venue located in the Memorial Union, may be small, but the sound is mighty. You can catch concerts from both well-known and up-and-coming artists at a minimal cost. This makes the M-Shop the perfect place to check out with your friends on both weekdays and weekends alike. The M-Shop also hosts a variety of other shows like poetry slams and standup comedy, so no matter what you want to see, there is something for everyone.
Attend a sporting event
Sure, I might not be super into sports, but that doesn't deter me from enjoying Iowa State sporting events. Getting all dressed up in Cyclone gear and standing in the student section at any game is an experience every Iowa State student should have! The cheers that ring through the stadium/coliseum -- along with the energy all around you -- is what makes our sporting events so exciting.
Find a club you love
College is a time to explore everything you're interested in, so to get started, grab some friends and check out all the clubs Iowa State offers. (There are over 800 to choose from!) It's completely fine to join everything you're interested in and narrow it down as you find the right fit. And don't just limit yourself to things that fit with your major. Go out on a whim and try something new!
Explore the Outdoor Recreation Program
If you're anything like me and love all things outside, you won't want to ignore the Outdoor Recreation Program. This program, headquartered inside State Gym, organizes long and short outdoor trips around the country; rents out outdoor gear for unbelievable prices; and hosts a variety of events and classes throughout the year. The staff also runs the rock wall in State Gym, which is an activity every Iowa State student should try at least once.
Join an intramural
Life gets busy and sometimes exercising can be pushed to the side, but a great way to keep in shape and meet some new friends is to join an intramural. My freshman year, I joined intramural soccer and had a blast! I also highly recommend trying intramural curling and Battleship H2O (Can you sink someone else's canoe?), two sports you'll probably never have the chance to try outside of Iowa State.
Participate in homecoming events
This fall, you will not want to miss Iowa State's homecoming! There are tons of events leading up to the homecoming football game including a parade, pancake feed, and many opportunities for free/cheap food on campus. The camaraderie that takes place during this week is so much fun, and it's topped off with a football game during a beautiful time of year.
Take in a movie at Cyclone Cinema
Have you ever sat in a lecture hall at Iowa State and wondered, "Wouldn't it be cool to watch a movie in here?" Well, turns out, you can! Every Thursday through Sunday at 7 and 10 p.m. you can check out Carver 101 to catch the latest films for free. If you grab a punch card at your first movie and get it punched at three films total, you can get entered into a raffle for a $100 Best Buy gift card.
Challenge your friends to a game at CyBowl & Billiards
You probably already know that the MU has dining options, meeting space, and the University Book Store, but did you know it's also home to a bowling alley? Located in the basement, you can find CyBowl & Billiards, a full-service bowling alley that also features pool tables, arcade games, and ping pong! This is a great place to hang out with a group of friends during any day of the week, and you can't beat the price!
Watch the fashion show
Did you know Iowa State has the 8th highest ranked fashion program in the nation and the 2nd highest ranked program in the Midwest? You'll definitely find evidence of these rankings at the yearly spring fashion show. Held right on campus at Stephens Auditorium, you'll want to make a night of this great event with all your friends.
Get creative at the Workspace
After a long day of class, a great way to unwind is by channeling your creative side. With a monthly walk-in craft, weekly class offerings, and an open throwing studio, there is no limit to the creativity you can have at the Workspace located in the basement of the MU. The pottery studio is a great place to make gifts for friends and family, and learning how to throw pottery is tons of fun.
