Sharing the adventure of learning with the world

Claire Opperman hands a stack of books to someone

As a first-year student in science education at Iowa State, Claire Opperman felt Alpha Kappa Psi was the perfect fit for her. The business fraternity offered a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Little did she know, she also would be introduced to a new passion -- promoting literacy and education around the world.

Together with her new friends on the Service Committee, Claire helped lead the Worldwide Book Drive, a national effort that has collected and distributed 3,000,000 used books globally. This saves millions of pounds of books from ending up in landfills, instead diverting them to those in need, those who hunger for an education and a better life.

At Iowa State, we have found that when given the right leadership opportunities, students blossom. That's why we offer more than 800 clubs and organizations, helping students explore interests and discover their passion -- while meeting some lifelong friends along the way.

Alpha Kappa Psi made Claire the new vice president of education, inspiring new pledges to get involved and make a difference. The business fraternity has a motto: "It's not how good you are, it's how good you want to be." Claire might add, "It's also how much good you want to spread."
