Removing obstacles

Iowa State is a founding member of the University Innovation Alliance, a national consortium of innovative public research universities aimed at improving the number and diversity of college graduates. Several initiatives have been created, including the UIA completion grant program that provides assistance to students who are approaching graduation, but face financial hurdles to complete their education.

In the UIA's first six years, Iowa State graduated an additional 9,014 students – a 37% increase overall.

    An annual student-driven conference provides programming that serves as a campuswide forum on issues of race and ethnicity, covering all facets of diversity, equity and inclusion.

    Filling the gaps

    Focused initiatives like the Design Closet are game-changers for some students. Jordan Brooks, director of equity, inclusion and multicultural student services in the College of Design, expanded the program to make design supplies more accessible to all students.
