A marching musical adventure

Marching band members

Iowa State football fans love the Iowa State University Cyclone Football 'Varsity' Marching Band. That's evident every time the crowd roars when the band takes the field. As it turns out, they aren't the only ones who think our band rocks. So does the John Philip Sousa Foundation, which recently awarded the band its prestigious Sudler Trophy that recognizes collegiate marching bands with the highest of musical standards and innovative marching routines and ideas, and which [have] made important contributions to the advancement of the performance standards of college marching bands over a number of years.

How does it feel getting one of the greatest recognitions a marching band can receive? Pretty amazing. "I feel so incredibly humbled to be a part of a band that shares this title with so many great bands before us," said Elena Foster, senior in elementary education. Mary Lowe, senior in genetics and Spanish, echoed that sentiment. "It's nice to see all of our hard work and dedication doesn't go unnoticed," Lowe said.

Not only does Iowa State's marching band have a reputation as one of the top bands in the country -- it's also known as being a tight-knit community. "It was nice to come to the first day of classes and already have 350 new friends," said Jarod Bodensteiner, sophmore in materials engineering. "The biggest impact marching band had on me was all the friends I got to make before the year even started," said Craig Parker, junior in mechanical engineering.

All across Iowa State, you'll find opportunities to get involved in activities outside of the classroom, from marching band to interior design. And who knows -- you could even meet your new BFFs when you get involved. It's like Parker says, "I highly recommend you get involved in something outside of your school work. It's one of the easiest ways to meet new people that you already have something in common with." We happen to think that's great advice to follow on your Iowa State adventure.
