A fashionable journey
Choosing a major can be like deciding what to wear for the day -- sometimes it takes trying on a couple of things to get it right. For Ames-born Todd Snyder, Iowa State was where he formed the foundation of his career as a fashion designer. But first it took trying on finance as a major for him to decide what it was he really wanted to do with his life. And as it turned out, it wasn’t finance. It was fashion.
By changing from finance to textiles and clothing, Todd was able to follow his dreams while learning about fashion design, product development, consumer behavior and more from leading scholars in the fashion field. After making the switch, he never looked back -- and it didn’t take long for him to become a sought-after designer, lending his talents to major fashion brands like J.Crew and the Gap.
But in the back of his mind still lingered the dream he had even while he was a finance major at Iowa State -- designing his very own menswear line. And in 2011, he made that dream come true, launching his Todd Snyder label of casual American classics to rave reviews.
At Iowa State, Todd learned skills that would help him become a leading menswear designer. But it’s also where he learned a bigger lesson -- to take a chance and follow his dreams.
