Performing maintenance on the mind
In 1974, the maintenance shop in Iowa State’s Memorial Union traded in its tool belts for guitars, microphones, and stage lights -- and became the fabled M-Shop, a one-of-a-kind live entertainment venue.
Run by students, the M-Shop offers a vibe unlike any other venue. Its intimate atmosphere has attracted amazing artists: bluesman Muddy Waters, jazz great Chick Corea, folk legend Arlo Guthrie, and rockers Jack Johnson and Smashing Pumpkins.
The M-Shop also offers Iowa State students their own place in the spotlight. Local artists perform music, comedy, musicals, and theater. One of the most popular nights is when a student improv troupe performs.
At Iowa State, we’re all about helping our students experience life up close and personal. That’s why we offer them unlimited social activities like Broadway shows, Big 12 athletics, nationally touring concerts, and stage plays.
Come to think of it, after all these years, the M-Shop is still dedicated to maintenance. Only now, it’s refreshing the spirits of Iowa State students after an intense week of cracking the books.
