An officer and a motivator

About face: When Lt. Col. Lawrence A. Braue arrived in 2004, ISU's Army ROTC program ranked in the bottom half of the nation's 273 battalions. Braue and his cadre raised the bar with tough standards and a lofty expectation -- that ISU's cadets could be among the best. Now, they are: This year, the Cyclone Battalion is No. 3, with five seniors in the top 4 percent.

Long title: Professor and chair of military science and commander of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps Battalion.

Classes taught: Military Science 401 (The Military Team) and 402 (The Professional Officer).

In touch: Braue stays in touch with many former students from ISU and his three-year assignment with the University of South Florida's ROTC and military science department.

Best stint: "This is the best four years of my life. I can't wait to get up and come to work with these students. When you think about building future leaders of tomorrow, it's a tremendous honor. And these students take leadership development very seriously. They strive for excellence in everything they do."

Moving out: In June, Braue rotates out of academia to a regular Army unit

Larry Braue

"Leading the ROTC program here has been the most challenging, exciting and fulfilling thing I've ever done."
