A student who played (but mostly worked) at Wimbledon

The grass is always greener: Some students spend their summer working on their tan. Joe Bowser, a senior from Fort Dodge, Iowa, spent his summer at Wimbledon. An internship with the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club gave the horticulture major (with an emphasis in turfgrass) an impressive addition to his resume, which already contains experience with the Iowa Cubs grounds crew and work on ISU's athletics fields.

It's who you know: Bowser connected with Wimbledon groundskeeper Eddie Seaward through ISU horticulture professor David Minner. He launched an e-mail campaign his freshman year, finally earning a position on the temporary summer grounds staff. He earned one credit for the paid internship.

Responsibilities: Bowser's duties included work all around the grounds -- mowing, painting court lines or rehabilitating the courts. During Wimbledon, he enjoyed a courtside seat on Centre Court and met several of tennis' biggest stars. That is, when he wasn't pulling out the tarps for the rain delays.

Bowser

"They usually don't hire people from the States, but I think it's hard to find people who have experience in the turf field and are qualified. I think that helped me get the job."
