How you can help
Here are some ways Iowa State University students, faculty, and staff can help maintain a safe campus:

Proactive measures
  • Secure all sensitive materials and information.
  • Appropriately secure residence halls and academic buildings.
  • Maintain key control.
  • Protect access codes and access control cards.
  • Change combinations regularly.
  • Account for and examine deliveries in a timely manner.
  • Lock unattended offices and labs.
  • Familiarize yourself with building evacuation routes.
Reactive measures
Immediately report the following to the Iowa State University Police Division (294-4428 or 911):

  • Unfamiliar people (in buildings or areas) who do not appear to be conducting legitimate business.
  • Individuals monitoring areas, buildings, or entrances.
  • Unauthorized personnel in restricted areas.
  • Illegitimate requests for information.
  • Clothing that is not consistent with weather conditions.
  • Packages or containers being carried into public events.
  • Individuals attempting to access mechanical rooms, utility areas, node rooms, or steam tunnels.
  • Signs of forced entry into a facility or maintenance area.
  • Unusual or suspicious packages or containers, especially those found at large gatherings or near air handling systems.
  • Unexplained powders, liquids, droplets, mists or clouds.
  • Unscheduled spraying or discovery of spray devices or bottles.
  • Atypical odors that are fruity, flowery, sharp, or pungent.
  • Dead animals in unusual quantities.
  • Unexpected or unfamiliar delivery trucks.
  • Vehicles containing unusual or suspicious materials or parcels.
  • Illegally parked vehicles near buildings or Cy-Ride stops.
  • Substances leaking or spilling from vehicles.
  • Lost keys or access control cards.
