Nov. 13 deadline to buy chartered bus tickets for Thanksgiving break

Friday, Nov. 13, is the last day for students to buy tickets for the Thanksgiving Break chartered bus rides offered by the Office of New Student Programs. As in past years, there will be buses for students from the Chicago-land and Twin Cities area of Minnesota. The buses will depart campus Nov. 20 and return Nov. 29. Students can get additional information and/or purchase tickets in the New Student Programs Office, 2630 Memorial Union or online.

Male research participants sought

Researchers in the food science and human nutrition department are looking for male volunteers, age 18 to 50 years, to participate in a research study to determine the effects of food viscosity on appetite. Details are online.

Planet Sub will donate sales to Dance Marathon Nov. 11

Planet Sub, 2320 Lincoln Way, is hosting a fund-raiser for Dance Marathon Nov. 11 (5-9 p.m.). During this time, 15 percent of all sales will benefit Dance Marathon's philanthropic work for Children's Miracle Network.

Seasonal flu vaccine available at health center

Students can get the seasonal flu vaccine at Thielen Student Health Center on a walk-in basis every Saturday from 9 to 11:45 a.m., at a cost of $25. Anyone who receives the H1N1 vaccine in flu mist form must wait 14 days before receiving the seasonal vaccine in flu mist form.

President Gregory Geoffroy presented Iowa State's plan for dealing with a mid-year $24.5 million reduction in state funding during the Oct. 29 meeting of the State Board of Regents. See budget updates.

Scholarships available for non-traditional students

The Margaret Sloss Women's Center is administering four scholarships for non-traditional age students. Applications are due by Jan. 15, 2010. Call 4-4154 for more information.

Nominations sought for gender equity award

Faculty and staff are asked to nominate candidates for the fourth annual Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award. Eligible candidates are Iowa State faculty and staff, undergraduate and graduate students and Ames community members. Nominations are due by Dec. 16. ISU "Deal or No Deal" game for students is Nov. 6

ISU's Student Union Board and ISU AfterDark will host a modified version of the TV game show "Deal or No Deal" Nov. 6 (9 p.m., MU Sun Room). The object is to win as many tickets as possible to enter drawings for prizes that include a digital camera, iPod Touch, iPod Nano, Wii and others. To get bonus tickets, stop by the SUB table at UDCC Nov. 4 and Nov. 6 (over the lunch hours).

Library opens new computer lab

Iowa State University Library opens a new Learning Connections Center computer classroom (134 Parks) adjacent to the Help & Information Desk. The classroom, funded in large part by the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, contains 48 student computers with shared instructor monitors at each station. The classroom will function as an open computer lab when not being used for library instruction programs. More.

Save the date: Sustainability symposium Feb. 23-24

The second annual ISU Sustainability Symposium will feature an evening reception Feb. 23 and a day packed with presentations, panel discussions and a research poster session on Feb. 24. The symposium will be open to those inside and outside the Iowa State community. The president's office will cover the $60 registration fee for ISU faculty, staff and students who attend the symposium. Registration materials will be posted soon on the Live Green! web site.

An ISU meteorology student is conducting an online survey exploring how practical it is to use social network sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, to communicate weather-related information, especially severe weather warnings. You can help by taking this quick survey.
