Nov. 19

H1N1 clinics scheduled Nov. 23-24; most students are eligible to receive vaccine

Story County Public Health has scheduled public H1N1 vaccination clinics in Ames on Nov. 23 and 24. The clinics will be held:

  • Monday, Nov. 23, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Scheman Building, rooms 260-262, on the Iowa State campus; and
  • Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at RSVP, Suite 123, Colorado Junction Mall, 113 Colorado Ave.

Persons age six months to 24 years remain among the priority groups eligible to receive the H1N1 vaccine; vaccinations are free.

Registration open for Dec. 5 Iowa Organic Conference

Students have a special registration fee of $35 for the 9th annual Iowa Organic Conference Dec. 5 in the Scheman Building. The event includes exhibits, three breakout sessions and a keynote address by the Leopold Center's Jerry DeWitt. Students interested in attending should e-mail Dan Cwach.

Used magazine sale benefits MU browsing library

Support the Memorial Union's browsing library by purchasing back issues of various magazines Nov. 30 through Dec. 4 (8 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, MU browsing library). Available titles include Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated, Time, Rolling Stone, Wired and more. All items are 25 cents.

ISU Dairy Products Evaluation Team, returns, places in national contest

Iowa State University's Dairy Products Evaluation Team placed fourth overall in the 88th Collegiate Dairy Products Evaluation contest in a national student competition in Glenview, Ill. The team also placed third in individual categories of cottage cheese, Cheddar cheese and butter. More.

Block and Bridle Club receives national awards

Iowa State's Block and Bridle Club received four awards at the 90th Block and Bridle National Convention, held Nov. 12-14 in Louisville, Ky. The club received first place honors for its yearbook and for its web site, and third place for club activities. Senior Justine Hosch also received second place in the outstanding junior competition.

Volunteers sought for science bowls

Volunteers, both scientific and nonscientific, are sought to serve as moderators, judges, timekeepers and scorekeepers for the 2010 U.S. Department of Engergy Ames Laboratory/ISU science bowl competitions. The high school event is Jan. 30, the middle school event is Feb. 27 (both Saturdays) in Howe, Hoover and Black Engineering halls. Reminder: Business Café shuts down Nov. 19

At the close of business Nov. 19, the Business Café in the Gerdin Building will close for renovations. The café will reopen Jan. 11.

Give some warmth starting Nov. 16

The winter wear drive, Give Some Warmth, is Nov. 16 through Dec. 4. Donate gently used mittens, scarves, hats and coats at drop boxes located in most academic buildings, residence halls and Greek houses. On Dec. 2, clothing items will be for sale (second floor near old hotel desk, MU), which can be donated to the event. Contact Emily Lawler or Joseph Tisinger with questions.

Male research participants sought

Researchers in the food science and human nutrition department are looking for male volunteers, age 18 to 50 years, to participate in a research study to determine the effects of food viscosity on appetite. Details are online.

Save the date: Sustainability symposium Feb. 23-24

The second annual ISU Sustainability Symposium will feature an evening reception Feb. 23 and a day packed with presentations, panel discussions and a research poster session on Feb. 24. The symposium will be open to those inside and outside the Iowa State community. The president's office will cover the $60 registration fee for ISU faculty, staff and students who attend the symposium. Registration materials will be posted soon on the Live Green! web site.
