P&S forum will recap student recruitment, retention projects
The P&S Council's May open forum will feature summary presentations from four
of the 13 teams that received grants this year for student recruitment and
retention efforts. The four are: community-building among female agronomy
students, a preview of graduate school and how to prepare for it, preventing
substance abuse by providing alternative entertainment for students, and
turning HS students on to careers in transportation. The forum will be held
from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Memorial Union Gallery; all are
invited.

A retirement reception for Dean Ulrichson, professor of chemical engineering,
will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in 2061 Sweeney Hall.
Ulrichson has been on the faculty since 1970.

Calendar B the favorite among survey participants
A proposed academic calendar that adds a week to winter break and five
minutes to the class period and includes a two-day class break in
October is the favorite choice among faculty and students who recently ranked several
calendar proposals in an online survey. P&S and merit staff
preferred the current calendar.

Girls needed for computer study
Girls ages 9 to 12 years old are needed for a one-hour study of computer
games. No experience is required, and they will receive $20. Signed consent
is required. Participants will need to provide their own transportation to

Plant lab for children this weekend
Children of all ages may learn about nature through activities and crafts at
the "High in the Sky" PlantLab from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, at
Reiman Gardens. Cost is $3 per child for members or $10, non-members (one
adult and one child) or $15 per family (up to two adults and two children)
for non-members. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration
is not required.

April 24 Leacock memorial service is
April 27 Robert Leacock, professor emeritus of physics and
astronomy, died April 21 of pneumonia at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.
He was 67. Leacock was a member of the ISU faculty from 1967 to 1997. A
memorial service and reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at
the Unitarian Fellowship, 1015 Hyland Ave., Ames. His family prefers
memorials to the Natural Resources Defense Council, New York City; the
Southern Poverty Law Center, Montgomery, Ala.; or Amnesty International USA,
New York City.

Allen open forum today
Vice president for academic affairs and provost Ben Allen will participate
in a campus forum from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, to talk about his
leadership of the university's academic units and respond to questions.
Because Allen wasn't a candidate for provost at the time three finalists
visited campus last fall, he wasn't provided an opportunity to meet with the
university community. The Professional and Scientific Council organized the
forum; all staff, students and faculty are welcome. It will be held in the
Memorial Union Gallery.

Lavender Graduation May 8
The annual Lavender Graduation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
May 8, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. The ceremony recognizes lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender and ally students. The keynote speaker will be
Carolyn Cutrona, professor of psychology and interim director of the ISU
Institute for Social and Behavioral Research. The ceremony is free.

ISU creates info technology post
Later this month, a search committee will begin the task of finding a chief
information officer (CIO) for Iowa State. Business dean Labh Hira will lead
a 20-member committee of staff, faculty, administrators and students. A CIO
position at Iowa State emerged last year as a recommendation from the budget
and planning task force and was reaffirmed earlier this year by the
President's Advisory Committee on Budget and Planning.

During its monthly meeting in Cedar Falls, the Board of Regents, State of
Iowa, approved promotion and/or tenure for 68 ISU faculty members. The

Memorial service for J.T. Scott on April 15
J.T. Scott, former professor in the department of economics, died
April 10 in his home in Ames. Scott, 77, was a member of the Iowa State
faculty from 1955 until 1993. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m.
Tuesday, April 15, at the Collegiate united Methodist Church, 2622 W.
Lincoln Way.

Health care privacy polices in effect April 14
Enforcement of a federal law regarding the use of and restrictions for
personal medical information begins April 14. (The law is know as "HIPAA" --
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.) Health care providers
of all kinds -- medical clinics and hospitals, pharmacies, group health plans,
dentists, nursing homes, insurance companies -- have written policies
outlining how they will protect and use client information, and are required
to share their policies with their clients. ISU, as a group health plan
provider, has its own policy and will provide a copy to all employees.
Campus units that give support services to employee health benefits
(benefits office, ADP, accounts receivable, risk management, university
counsel) will follow the policy.
HIPAA comes in response to the proliferation of electronically stored data
and the need to protect that information from misuse or theft. Clients will
receive a copy of the policy the first time they visit a health care
provider on or after April 14.

Forsling marks 50th year on air
Longtime WOI Radio personality Don Forsling marked his 50th
anniversary in broadcasting April 10 in front of the mike, doing his
usual morning stint on WOI-FM's "Morning Report." Forsling started his
career at the age of 15, as a deejay at a Sioux City radio station and
has been with WOI for approximately four decades. Colleagues marked
the anniversary with a little on-air surprise and a helping of Lime
Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise (an inside joke with
Forsling and fans).

The annual Take Back the Night rally and march will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 9, on the Memorial Union terrace, with speakers and an open
mic, followed by a silent march around campustown and the surrounding area.
The march will end at Lake LaVerne, where luminaries will be lit to honor
victims and survivors of violence.

The Faculty Senate will begin discussing four options to the new academic
calendar during its meeting tonight. The calendar proposals were developed
by the Academic Calendar Task Force and recently submitted to President
Gregory Geoffroy. Geoffroy will attend the meeting to discuss the calendar
and the university's budget. The senate meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the North

Children sought for computer games study in psych department
Children aged 9 to 12 years are needed to participate in a one-hour study of
computer games being conducted on campus in ISU's psychology department.

Attorney Michael Goldman's scheduled seminar April 7 on developing and
commercializing
transgenic plants has been cancelled, due to bad weather on the East Coast.
Organizers are trying to reschedule Goldman's visit for later this
semester.

Campus community invited to make jars for cleansing ritual
The campus community is invited to make clay reliquary jars from 9 a.m. to 6
p.m. Monday, April 7, in front of the College of Design. The small jars
will be used during a cleansing ritual at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, also in
front of the College of Design. Various washes will be placed on the jars.
During the ritual, jars will burned with the prairie grass at the College of
Design. The fire and smoke is expected to produce a range of effects on the
pots, which participants may take home after the fire.

The deadline for abstracts for the annual Plant Sciences Institute Symposium
has been extended to April 11. The symposium, "Transposition, Recombination
and Application to Plant Genomics," will be held June 5-8 at Scheman.

Council proposes phased adjustments to P&S pay matrix
The Professional and Scientific Council on April 2 approved a series of
resolutions aimed at correcting the inconsistent effect of annual
"adjustments" to the P&S pay matrix and clarifying employees' expectations
for advancing through their pay grades. In other business, the council
approved a resolution supporting an ISU Extension request to tie ISU's
mileage reimbursement rate to the IRS reimbursement rate.

Celebrity Concert Series in April
The third annual "Celebrity Concert Series" will be held at 5:20 p.m.
Mondays in Tye Hall, Music. Tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for students,

Music Hall. Proceeds will benefit the Iowa State's keyboard maintenance
fund. The four-concert series will kickoff Monday, April 7. Other concerts

diversity conversations will feature a panel discussion moderated by

Norman Scott, professor at Cornell University, will discuss
"Nonobiotechnology, Bioproducts and Sustainability: Where is Agriculture
Going?" during a seminar from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, April 14, in 1140 Howe.
Scott's research is directed to the development of sustainable communities
with emphasis on biologically derived fuels, renewable energy, recycling,
managed ecosystems and industrial ecology.

March 31 Applicants sought for NCAA
faculty athletics representative A screening committee seeks
applicants for Iowa State's faculty athletics representative to the NCAA.
The committee will begin reviewing applications Monday, April 14, and
forward finalists to President Gregory Geoffroy, who will appoint a
representative for a three-year term. The appointee will represent the
university at Big 12 and NCAA meetings, advise the president on athletic
matters and help maintain the academic integrity of the athletics program
and student athletes.
