Color

If you use color (and color only) to convey important information, you'll limiting the usefulness of the web page for those who have visual disabilities. Here are a few ways improve accessibility while using color.

Use more than color to call attention

To call attention to something, use more than color. The chart below would be useless to someone who is blind or colorblind if the poisonous plants were only colored. Adding an asterisk to the poisonous plants makes all the difference.

This chart shows common household plants in the Midwest. Plants with an asterisk (*) are toxic and could be fatal if ingested by small children or pets.

*Poinsettia

Aloe Vera

African Violet

*Oleandar

Prayer Plant

Begonia

*Dieffenbachia

Christmas Cactus

*Ivy

Fern

Rubber Plant

*Jerusalem Cherry
