First in the nation

Iowa State established the first public veterinary school in the nation in 1879, and still is innovating with excellence in professional practice and research. Fourth-year students pick one of four areas of study to focus on: small animal, equine, food animal, or mixed animal.

Locke Karriker, director of the nation’s only national center devoted to swine education, is teaching Iowa State veterinary students and veterinary professionals the most progressive, evidence-based practices in pork production and health assurance.
