New shape for balesWesley Buchele, long-time agricultural engineering professor, was well known for his innovations in machinery. In the 1960s, he patented the idea for the large round hay baler. It has become the predominant forage-handling machine and its round "Iowa bales" adorn the countryside. Perhaps his most significant contribution is the revolutionary ridge-till farming technique that conserves soil moisture, preserves topsoil, reduces herbicide use and saves farmers time and fuel.Return to Tech takes index
