Senior dietetic students in nutrition counseling seek employee volunteers willing to meet three times during spring semester. The students will evaluate diets and set specific and reasonable goals toward improving eating patterns. Potential volunteers cannot have hypertension, diabetes or high cholesterol. ISU's Student Employment Center is accepting nominations for the 2010 ISU Student Employee of the Year through Feb. 12. The award recognizes undergraduate students' reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, interpersonal skills and unique contributions to his/her campus employer. Learn how to manage your bibliographies using online tools. A hands-on workshop Feb. 22 (10-11 a.m., 134 Parks Library) will cover the basics of EndNote Web, including setting up an account, gathering references from library databases and creating a bibliography. Students from the worksite health promotion class (HS 380) are offering free screenings Feb. 17 (11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Gerdin faculty lounge). Students will screen for blood pressure, posture and body composition. No reservation is required.

Meeting Feb. 4 in Ames, the state Board of Regents approved a 6 percent tuition increase for in-state students at Iowa State next year, but moments later voted to rescind a $100-per-student surcharge already billed this spring.

Iowa State University's Virtual Reality Applications Center will be showing off its 3-D technology this month and there's still room to see the show. The center's next "Virtual Reality Experience" will be 1-2 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Alliant Energy/Lee Liu Auditorium of Howe Hall. The tour is free and open to the public, but online registration is required. There also will be tours on April 16, May 21, July 16, Sept. 17 and Nov. 12.

An increasing number of campus personal computers are being compromised during seeminly routine web browsing. The current hacking plan seems to be more successful than past attempts. The Margaret Sloss Women's Center will present Eve Ensler's play, The Vagina Monologues, as part of the global "V-Day" movement to end violence against women and girls. Performances begin at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11 and 6:30 and 9 p.m. Feb. 12 in the MU Maintenance Shop. Tickets are $15 (ISU students $12) and available at the Maintenance Shop box office. Proceeds will benefit the ACCESS shelter serving Story, Boone and Green counties.

Applications are being accepted from both students and research mentors for next year's Undergraduate Research Assistantship program. The program is for juniors and seniors who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25. The student wages are covered in this ratio: 50 percent college work-study program, 50 percent faculty sponsor. Due to illness, Howie Day is unable to perform at the Maintenance Shop Feb. 2. The performance tentatively has been rescheduled for March 10 at 8 p.m. All tickets sold for Howie Day's Maintenance Shop performance (originally Jan. 27) will be honored for the rescheduled date. Ticketholders unable to attend the rescheduled performance may return their tickets for a refund. This must be done in person at the M-Shop ticket office prior to the event.

The athletics department announced today that it has switched a pair of games in the 2010 schedule. The Cyclones will play Kansas State at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City Sept. 18 (originally scheduled for Oct. 9). K State is the designated home team. Iowa State will host Utah on Oct. 9 (originally scheduled for Sept. 18). Kansas State had requested the change.

Applications are due Feb. 15 for the professor-in-charge post in ISU's Carver Academy for a three- to five-year term beginning this summer. The academy provides academic and student affairs support to students who hold the four-year, full-tuition GW Carver scholarship, a merit-based scholarship for multicultural students. Applicants should be tenured ISU faculty members with current knowledge about multicultural education, a history of interaction with ISU multicultural students and applicable administrative or committee experience. Patagonia founder and environmentalist Yvon Chouinard kicks off Iowa State's Symposium on Sustainability with a talk the evening of Feb. 23 in the Memorial Union. A full day of presentations about green activities, both on campus and off, will follow on Feb. 24. Students, faculty and staff may attend all or parts of the conference as well as the noon lunch for free. The event also will be webcast. Those planning to attend are asked to register online.
