THE CHALLENGES OF BRICKS AND MORTAR

In the beginning there was the Farm House. Iowa State's first building is still with us -- preserved as a museum -- but most of its original buildings have disappeared. As Iowa State grew, its buildings changed. The original red brick buildings and residential cottages burned, or crumbled, or outlived their usefulness. A few remain -- Catt Hall, Morrill Hall, Sloss House.

As state funding narrows and budgets become tighter, the question of how we maintain our buildings -- whether they are 5 years old or 100 years old -- continues to be a thorny one. In the spring issue of VISIONS magazine, we'll examine the challenges of maintaining ISU's infrastructure.

The spring issue also will give you a glimpse into today's student fads and fashion. What's in and what's out? We'll show you what is "challenging students" as they try to keep up with ever-changing trends.

VISIONS is mailed quarterly to all dues-paying members of the ISU Alumni Association. Join online at www.isualum.org or call toll-free 1-877-ISU-ALUM.
