Dear readers

This issue of The Iowa Stater marks the end of a 27-year tradition. Due to rising publication costs, declining financial support and university budget cuts, we no longer can continue to send this newspaper to our 170,000 alumni.

We're sorry to see The Iowa Stater go, but we don't intend to forget about you. We're excited about new technology that allows us to keep you updated on your alma mater on a daily basis.

We're beefing up coverage of Iowa State on the Web. Click "News" from the ISU homepage (www.iastate.edu) for frequent updates from the Office of University Relations on campus activities, university research, interesting ISU people, Cyclone athletics and more.

Alumni Association members can keep up with ISU happenings through a biweekly electronic newsletter delivered right to their in-boxes. Members also receive VISIONS magazine, the quarterly publication that features in-depth stories about the university and its alumni. For more information, see the Alumni Association Web page (www.isualum.org/go/visions). Members also will have online access to "Alumni Notes," previously published in The Iowa Stater.

The Iowa Stater debuted in September 1974, combining the Iowa State Alumnus (begun in 1905) and News of Iowa State (begun in 1948) into one publication. Over the years, The Iowa Stater changed its look but never its mission: to keep alumni informed about what is happening at the university and with its people.

Some of our favorite stories over the years were based on our opportunities to talk to you about your recollections of life on campus. You told us what residence hall life used to be like and what you used to do to have fun on campus. We learned many of you have made substantial gifts to the world through your inventions and ideas.

Though the form will be different, our staff will continue to bring you the news and stories about Iowa State. Look for us on the Web.
