Coming to an empty lot
Construction fencing and hard hats were becoming as common as bell bottoms
and cell phones on campus last fall. In addition to a significant remodel of
parts of Beardshear and continuing work on a new Honors Program building,
Iowa State has launched three large building projects. State building funds
were earmarked for these projects, so construction will continue in spite of
cuts to Iowa State's operating budget.
- A Sept. 8 groundbreaking kicked off work on Hoover Hall,
phase II of the Engineering Teaching and Research Complex, between Marston
Hall and the new Howe Hall.
A July 2003 completion date is the goal. Nearly $30.3 million of the
building's
$63.6 million price tag is from private funds. Hoover Hall will be home to
the materials science and engineering department.
- College leaders broke ground Sept. 29 for the four-story Gerdin
Business Building in the southeast corner of central campus. The anticipated
completion date is December 2003. Nearly $13.4 million of the $24.5 million
cost is private funds.
- The fall's last groundbreaking, on Oct. 20, launched work on the Roy
J. Carver Co-Laboratory in the northwest corner of campus. The first
building of Iowa State's Plant Sciences Institute, the research facility
will be a place where plant scientists from Iowa State, industry and
universities worldwide work collaboratively. It will include research space
for visiting scientists and small laboratories for industry incubators. Its
$12.75 million price tag includes just over $5.6 million in private
funds.
