The Iowa Stater November 2000
First Carver fellow lands Ph.D.
It was a "first" for Iowa State and the culmination of a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" for Altoine Alston when he received his Ph.D. degree during summer commencement.Alston is the first George Washington Carver Fellow to receive an Iowa State doctoral degree. The fellowship program was created in 1996 to give outstanding minority students an opportunity to earn Ph.D. degrees. The program honors George Washington Carver, Iowa State's first black student and faculty member. There are five other George Washington Carver doctoral fellows at Iowa State. His selection for a George Washington Carver doctoral fellowship "truly was my once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Alston, a native of North Carolina. "I have had the opportunity to study under some of the most renowned researchers in agricultural education, in one of the premier programs in the field." Alston returned to his first alma mater, North Carolina A&T University, this fall as an assistant professor.
