Stadium named for Trice

Iowa State's football stadium has a new name. The 22-year-old Cyclone Stadium/Jack Trice Field is now Jack Trice Stadium.

Trice was ISU's first black student-athlete. He died Oct. 8, 1923, from injuries suffered two days earlier in a football game against the University of Minnesota. Trice is the only Cyclone student-athlete to die from injuries sustained in athletic competition.

Trice was regarded as a fine athlete and student. His fatal injuries were suffered in only his second varsity game.

"It is clear that Jack Trice, for a large majority of students and others associated with Iowa State University, exemplifies a number of heroic qualities, including determination, courage, enthusiasm and giving one's all to an important cause," said President Martin Jischke. "He has become a hero, not so much for what he accomplished, because his life was cut short, but for what he represented."

The sculpture of Trice that sat between Carver and Beardshear halls since 1988 has been restored and moved to a site outside the stadium.
