Campus on the grow

Alumni who have not been on campus in a number of years would be surprised at the changes. There are new buildings and additions popping up all over, funded by private gifts and through the ISU Foundation. Here's a quick look at what's under construction or soon will be.

  • College of Design auditorium addition. A large multimedia auditorium will serve both the college and university. Also included in the project are expanded shop and studio space, a revitalized atrium and entry plaza. The project is in the design phase and construction should begin early next spring. (Total cost: $1.8 million)

  • Engineering Teaching and Research Complex. When completed, this will be the largest building project undertaken at Iowa State. The complex will have high-tech classrooms that blend computer-aided instruction and visualization techniques and instructional labs. Construction of a building on the west side of Bissell Road will begin this fall and should be complete in 1999. (Total cost: $36 million) A second building will be constructed on the east side of Bissell, pending funding from the Iowa Legislature. Construction of this building may begin as early as July 1998. The two buildings will be linked by a skywalk and an underground tunnel. (Total cost: $25 million)

  • Intensive Livestock Facility. New facilities will enhance the animal science department's efforts. The project will include renovating Kildee Hall, the old "meat lab" and existing meat lab, as well as constructing new laboratories and large research and teaching facilities. Construction should be completed in 1999. (Total cost: $20.5 million) A second part will include a new facility for infectious disease research at the College of Veterinary Medicine. (Total cost: $9.2 million)

  • Jack Trice Stadium. A new press tower and sky boxes are under construction and the existing press box area is being remodeled on the west side of Jack Trice Stadium. The new and remodeled space will house 23 skybox suites and new press, radio, television and coaching booths. Work should be completed in time for the 1997 football season. (Total cost: $6.1 million)

  • National Swine Research Center. This U.S. Department of Agriculture project includes a laboratory/office building connected to the National Soil Tilth Laboratory. Center researchers will focus on more efficient production of pork products while meeting environmental and safety concerns. The project is scheduled to be completed this spring. (Total project cost: $10 million)

  • Palmer Building. This new facility will house the human development and family studies department, including the Child Development Laboratory School, the Family Financial Counseling Clinic and the Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic. It will help consolidate programs in the human development and family studies department, as well as the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, and allow expansion of the lab school to include an infant program. The project is in the design phase and construction should begin before the end of the year. (Total cost: $5.9 million)

  • Seed Science Center addition This project includes a high- tech training facility, expanded seed health laboratory and modern classrooms. Construction was completed this spring. (Total cost: $632,000)

  • Student Health Center. The new building between Beyer and Westgate halls will replace outmoded facilities now in use. Additional space will allow after-hours clinics and new diagnostic equipment in labs. Construction will be completed this month. (Total cost: $6.1 million)

  • University Child Care Center. Located at the College of Veterinary Medicine complex, the center is expected to be completed this summer. (Total costs: $1.5 million)

  • West Pammel development. Two new buildings are under construction in the old Pammel Court area. A library storage facility will house less frequently used books, freeing space in Parks Library. It is scheduled for completion this spring. An Administrative Services Facilities Office Building, scheduled for completion this fall, will house staff from extension communications, several business offices and Administrative Data Processing. The new facility will free space for student services on central campus. (Total cost: $6.4 million)

Construction continues on the library storage building.
