Hixson scholar wins FFA award

Michael Read, Iowa State sophomore and a member of the first Hixson Opportunity class, was named the 1996 National Future Farmers of America winner for agricultural, mechanical, technical services and entrepreneurship at the national FFA convention in Kansas City in November. Read, who was among the Hixson Opportunity students featured in the December 1995 edition of The Iowa Stater, is from Ladora and majors in agricultural systems technology. The Hixson scholarship program was created for Iowa students who have demonstrated potential to succeed at college, but lack resources because of financial and personal difficulties.
