Cyclones head for Big 12 tourney play

he Big Eight is gone, but the pre-game fun will remain the same for Cyclones at the men's Big 12 Conference basketball tournament in Kansas City in March.

The Iowa State Alumni Association will sponsor a party prior to each Cyclone game during the March 6-9 tournament, said David Critchlow, assistant director of alumni events. Parties at the American Royal Arena Complex (formerly the Governor's Building), south of Kemper Arena, begin two hours prior to each session in which Iowa State plays.

The tournament traditionally has begun on Friday, but Iowa State could begin play on Thursday, March 6, Critchlow noted. All 12 conference teams will play in the tournament, with the top four seeds receiving byes on March 6. The tournament schedule is set after the regular season ends March 2.

Each pre-game party will feature performances by the ISU cheer and pompon squads and pep band and remarks by President Martin Jischke and athletic director Gene Smith. During the first party, the ISU Club of Kansas City will hold a sports memorabilia auction to raise scholarship funds.

The ISU Club of Kansas City also will sponsor a pre-Big 12 tournament party at the Embassy Suites hotel in Westport Plaza. Check for information about the Spring Fling party on the Alumni Association Web page. For more information, contact David Critchlow at (515) 294-2632 or send e-mail to otis@foun.adp.iastate.edu.
