Merit scholar numbers nearly triple

owa State welcomed 154 National Merit scholars and four National Achievement scholars (specifically for black Americans) to its freshman class this fall, the most in the university's history. The scholarship programs identify top high school students nationally who performed well both during their high school years and on a series of standard entrance exams.

Tom Thielen, vice president for student affairs, said Iowa State strengthened its commitment to the National Merit and Achievement programs in several ways in the last year: providing more scholarship dollars; contacting finalists earlier; and providing personalized campus visits for finalists.

For the first time at ISU, the scholarship covers tuition and room and board and is renewable for three more years if the student maintains a GPA of 2.5. When the national rankings are published in January, ISU officials expect Iowa State will be among the top five public universities in the number of National Merit scholars.
