Gray Skies All Around June 29 proved to be a dreary day all around for Iowa State's solar car team. It was overcast and rainy -- not a great day for a car intended to run on sun power. Still, the Iowa State team was looking on the bright side. It was the ninth and final day of the 1,200-mile race from Indianapolis to Denver, the ISU car was clipping along at 45 miles an hour on back-up battery power and the finish line was only 30 miles away. That's when a rear tire on the car blew, sending the car into a guard rail. Driver Maury Anderson suffered a broken leg in the accident. Despite the accident, the Iowa State car finished 19th out of 38 cars in the Sunrayce. (Penalty time was assessed for the 30 miles not completed.) Solar car team members say they won't let the accident dampen their enthusiasm, and they'll be back in the solar pack for the next Sunrayce in 1997. _____ contact: University Relations, (515) 294-3129 updated: 9-28-95
