Cy Pumps Up A brawnier Cy that's part bird and part twister blew into Cyclone country this spring. The new symbol for Iowa State's athletic program is now appearing on caps, T-shirts and other Cyclone apparel. It was designed by Sean Michael Edwards Design Inc., a New York firm that also has designed logos for the World Series, the Seattle Mariners, Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors and a number of universities. The new symbol and eight related ones will bring consistency to Cyclone athletics, which has been represented by more than 20 symbols simultaneously in the past. In addition, the new series of symbols is expected to improve sales of Cyclone apparel and merchandise. Market tests showed the symbols were particularly popular with 12- to 18-year-olds, who are big buyers of sports apparel. ISU athletic director Gene Smith said the symbols are part of overall improvements in the athletic program. "As we become more successful and competitive at the Big 12 and NCAA levels," he said, "it's very important that we have consistent, quality symbols that people across Iowa and the nation will recognize immediately and connect to Iowa State University's athletic program." _____ contact: Internal Communications, (515) 294-3129 updated: 5-25-95
