Clean water for Moscow
Moscow, Russia's capital city, is looking to Iowa State's Center for Agricultural and Rural Development for ways to improve water quality. Moscow's drinking water is threatened by pollution from livestock farms and a growing number of inadequately plumbed "dachas," or vacation homes.
Demonstration sites show proper methods of manure application, waste disposal and water testing. Policy experts are crafting rural and agricultural rules, and educators are adding environmental concepts to Russian school curricula. Russians also have visited Iowa to learn about successful farming and community water-treatment practices.
"The goal is to improve Moscow's water supply and develop a watershed management approach that can be used in other areas of Russia or even Iowa," said project manager Charles Sauer.
