Improving industrial Iowa
Iowa's small-and medium-sized manufacturers are getting a helping hand from the Iowa Manufacturing Technology Center. The center's field agents and partner organizations across Iowa provide training programs, technical assessments and business operations advice. The center acts as a conduit, connecting small manufacturers with problems to the experts who can help.
The center helped a pipe organ manufacturer tap into ISU's metals analysis expertise to expand manufacturing capabilities while maintaining product quality. It helped another manufacturer improve its cast aluminum parts while lowering production costs. And it's helping a manufacturer of scientific incubators expand its overseas markets.
"If I can't walk away from a company and feel that it is stronger because of that interaction, then I haven't done my job," said Del Shepard, who organized the center.
