Alumni lead campaign efforts
ISU alumni and community leaders have proven to be a key element in the $26 million President's Scholarship Campaign. After only nine months, the campaign is more than halfway to its goal.
The campaign was launched last February with a $5 million gift from the Lied Foundation Trust of Las Vegas, which created the Christina Hixson Opportunity Awards. These awards of $2,500 are given each year to 100 freshmen from throughout the state.
Sixty-four alumni and community leaders have been enlisted to help the ISU Foundation raise additional private gifts and promote the campaign.
The President's Scholarship Campaign is chaired by Steve ('73) and Kathy ('72) Zumbach, Des Moines. John ('59) and Ruth DeVries, also from Des Moines, are serving as deputy campaign chairs.
The ISU Foundation has set June 30, 1997, as the target date for reaching the $26 million goal. So far, $14.2 million has been raised.
The campaign has five priority areas: Presidential Scholarships for National Merit and National Achievement Scholars; George Washington Carver Scholarships to reward high-performing minority students; student-athlete scholar-ships; a new program providing student leadership awards through the Presidents Leadership Initiative; and additional funding for the Hixson program to create some sophomore scholarships.
"We're pleased to be halfway toward our campaign goal in just nine months," said Murray Blackwelder, interim vice president for external affairs. "And we know that we'll be successful in raising added support from Iowans who are seeing the dramatic impact that our Hixson program is having in its first year.
"No other university in the country can point to a similar program that is proactively going to every county to recruit a promising student whose family challenges or financial circumstances would probably rule out the possibility of attending a university like Iowa State," he added.
